Josephine Butler
DC Councilmember
Josephine Butler (1920–1997) was a co-founder and former chair of the DC Statehood Party, an internationally respected community organizer, labor leader, environmental advocate, and champion for peace and social justice. A tireless supporter of District of Columbia statehood, Butler believed that every resident deserved equal representation, self-government, and a meaningful voice in democracy.
Beyond her leadership in the Statehood movement, she organized workers, promoted environmental stewardship through her work to restore Meridian Hill (Malcolm X) Park, advocated for women's rights, public health, neighborhood empowerment, and international peace. Her lifelong commitment to community service, grassroots organizing, and human dignity helped shape the values that continue to guide the DC Statehood Green Party. Her legacy remains a lasting source of inspiration for those working toward justice, equality, and democratic participation in Washington, D.C.
